About floating

What is “floating”?

Floating is the act of utilizing a “floatation tank”, also known as a “sensory deprivation chamber”.

Leave the noise and confusion behind and perhaps, for the first time in your life, experience total relaxation and deep healing in your private, peaceful space. It is truly the ultimate ESCAPE!

Floatation Therapy is most often used as a method for relaxation and to boost creativity. It can allow one to engage in a deep meditative state, regardless of any prior meditation experience.

Floatation therapy has been academically studied in the USA and in Sweden with published results showing a reduction of both pain and stress. The relaxed state also involves lowered blood pressure and maximum blood flow.

Floatation therapy may be used to complement other body work and healing methods. It is often paired with massage therapy and contrast therapy.

Floatation therapy developed from the research work of John Lilly although he was not primarily interested in therapy, but rather in the effect of sensory deprivation on the human brain and mind.

Especially in today’s day and age, we are exposed to countless stimuli, which can leave our bodies in a state of stress, causing numerous health problems.

Floating is becoming an increasingly popular practice in society, including for many celebrities and top athletes, such as Joe Rogan and Steph Curry.

Floatation Therapy is a luxurious way to soothe and heal the body from the constant stress of life's daily pressure.

Floatation Therapy Uses a Sensory Deprivation Chamber

The reason that a floatation tank is sometimes called a sensory deprivation chamber is that it is entirely light-proof and sound-proof.

Floatation tanks are approximately 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet high, with 6-12 inches of sterile water inside.

In the water, there are over 800 lbs of medical-grade Epsom salts, creating an environment that anyone will float in.

The high levels of salt allow one’s body to float naturally and spontaneously without effort. The center of buoyancy and the center of gravity of the head are in about the same place so you can tilt your head back comfortably without fear of drowning or sinking.

The saltwater is heated to skin temperature and stays 94-95 degrees Fahrenheit throughout your experience.

The tank is designed so that it is not airtight. You’ll have plenty of air.

To keep the tank air fresh, an air circulation system brings additional air from the room.

The air enters at the rear of the tank. You may want to lay at that end.

The tank has a large door that can not be locked.

You can use the tank with the door completely open, you can keep it partially open, or you can close it.

Many people have some fear or concern before they use a floatation tank for the first time.

Fears of floatation tanks include being alone in the dark, drowning, not having enough air, claustrophobia, and others.

The fears are usually the thought or the idea that YOU won't be in control of the situation, but in this situation, you are totally in control.

While at some times, it may feel a bit overwhelming to be in a completely dark and quiet environment. It may help to keep your eyes closed during the duration of the float to avoid disorientation.

While some may find it a bit strange at first, you will likely get used to it and be able to relax after the first few minutes.

There is no particular way to use the tank that is more correct than another. Any way you use it, that is comfortable for you, is the correct way to use it.
